Our history

Big Bethel AME Church traces its roots to 1847 as part of Union Church, Atlanta's first congregation. Although Union Church was established for whites, an enslaved group was allowed to worship there. Whites granted a petition allowing the enslaved to have their own church and provided 700 dollars. Bethel Tabernacle was completed in 1855. Big Bethel is recognized as Atlanta's oldest congregation, Black or white.
